The article, titled “Manic Thinking: Independent Effects of Thought Speed and Thought Content on Mood” appears in the September issue of Psychological Science, and was co-authored by Emily Pronin of Princeton University and Daniel Wegner of Harvard University.

The cost of short-term fixed-rate mortgages fell to a record low during June.

The average rate charged on a two-year deal for someone with a 25% deposit dropped to 3.67% during the month, down from 3.78%. It is the lowest level since records began in 1995, according to the Bank of England.

It was the third consecutive month in which the cost of the deals has fallen, with average rates dropping from 4.45% since June 2009.

There was also a fall in the cost of five-year fixed-rate mortgages, with the rates easing down by 0.03% to 5.35% during June.

The cost of five-year fixed- rate mortgages has been falling consistently since November last year, although rates are still up on April last year.

It remains to be seen if mortgage rates continue falling in July, after recent figures from financial information group Moneyfacts.co.uk suggested improvements in the market had stalled.

The number of different mortgage products available fell in the two weeks to the start of July, after steadily increasing since the beginning of the year.

Earlier this month, the Bank of England’s Credit Conditions Survey also indicated mortgage availability was set to worsen during the third quarter of the year, but yesterday’s figures contained some rare good news for savers, with interest rates increasing across all product types.

The average rate paid on a branch-based, instant-access account nearly doubled, rising from 0.12% to 0.22% in June, the highest level since December 2008 when the base rate was 2%.

There was also a big rise in the returns available on tax-free ISAs, with average rates rising from 0.46% to 0.7%, but the majority of savers will still struggle to find an account that provides a real return on their money, once tax and inflation are taken into account.
